Ambassadors of 19 foreign countries in Pécs

Diplomats delegated to Hungary arrived to Pécs on 20 January to get acquainted with the European Capital of Culture Programme.

First the ambassadors got information about this year’s cultural events and the current state of the key investment projects. After lunch the group lead by Zsolt Páva Mayor of the City of Pécs and Tvrtko Vujity official ambassador of the Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture Programme walked to the ’padlock wall’ in Janus Pannonius street – an emblematic place in dowtown Pécs; two fences that hold more hundreds of padlocks. Couples are said to put their locks there as tokens of their love, or individuals showing their devotion to the city. There, representing the guests, Ireny Comaroschi Ambassador of Romania ceremonially placed a lock on the fence as sign of their love towards the city. Following this Tvrtko Vujity who is also a certified guide hosted the prominent company through Promenade square. As the closing of their visit the ambassadors walked around the building sites of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter and the Pécs Conference and Concert Centre.

Jan Kennis Dutch Cultural Attaché told the representatives of the press that even though he expressed his concerns critically about the preparations of the Pécs European Capital of Culture Programme in the previous time period he made sure by now that the city earned the precious European Cultural Capital title.
