Another park handed over
The first stage of the revival of Tettye is finished
One highly important part of the Revival of the Public Spaces and Parks project of the Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture Programme is the Tettye park. It is situated on the side of the Mecsek hill and it has been one of the most famous and picturesque recreational sites for the Pécs people with its strange ruins, sinter cave and arboretum for many-many years. Now the first stage of its renovation works are finished and the people could take the park into possession again on 25 November.
The first stage of Tettye including the Wine House and the related supporting wall system, the vine and the road surface is almost completely finished except for the direct surroundings of the dilapidated renaissance palace of Bishop György Szathmáry.
The focus of the investment project was to renovate and rebuild the park in such a way to widen its functionality. A North-South main passage - accessible for people with disabilities – and the connecting roads have also been established to reveal the full area of the park.
During the revival of the park the biggest playground of Pécs including 24 toys altogether has also been built. The old giant-slides have been extended, and the stone elephant statue that stands as the symbol of Tettye in the Pécs hearts has also been renewed.
In the framework of the first stage of this investment project the upper part of János Böckh street has been abolished uniting the two sides of the park. Fulfilling the requirements of the planner’s concept; sports and game functions dominate the bottom part of the park. In the middle stand the fountains and the promenades that represent the infrastructure related primarily to relaxation.
The upper part of the park will give space for different programmes with its open-air stage that is renewed in the second stage of the investment project. On the other hand - because the parking places are here - this area will function as the entrance of the park for people arriving by cars.
It is important to state that during the first stage the old press house has been renovated and its building expanded to become the Tettye Wine House that wishes with its 582 vines to introduce the characteristic wine of the Pécs region with a cultural and touristical goal.
In the second stage of the investment project the panoramic promenade will be built between the Tettye Park and the Havihegy Church. As its name suggests this will be the place from where the visitors will get the most magnificent view of the city of Pécs. The promenade will also put an end to the bad and dangerous practise of the pedestrians to use the road for walking in the absence of a proper sidewalk.
