Special stamp sheet in honour of Pécs
The Hungarian Post has published a special stamp sheet in honour of the Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture Programme. The sheet includes 25 pieces of stamps picturing the sights and spectacles of the City of Pécs.
On the stamps at the place of their price the word ’belföld’ (inland) can be read that means that the stamp can be used inside the country indefinitely. Ildiko Szűts CEO of Hungarian Post Co. Ltd. introduced the special Pécs sheet of stamps during the international press conference of the series of programmes then put it into commercial circulation with Zsolt Páva mayor of the City of Pécs. By today the stamp sheet is available in the majority of the post offices.
The temporary envelope of the sheet has a picture of Jókai square with Zoltán Pál’s work ’the belly button of the Earth’. The temporary stamp pictures a stylised drawing about the graphical montage of the Pécs sights. Attila Elekes garphic artist planned this special stamp sheet of the post office based on the pictures of József Hajdú photo artist. The sheets are produced by ’Pénzjegynyomda’ (the Hungarian Banknote Printing Company). The number of prints will be decided by the commercial demand.
The Hungarian Post Co. Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement with the local government of the city of Pécs and Pécs2010 Non-profit Ltd for the success of the series of programmes last January. As the main sponsor of the European events the post office had already published special stamps in honour of the city and its citizens promoting culture. On 19 August 2009 a stamp was issued to greet the 1000-year-old bishopric of Pécs. This stamp pictures the cathedral of Pécs and its founder King Saint Stephen, with its temporary envelope picturing the ornamented interior of the cathedral. Another stamp sheet issued last year; a collection of personal stamps by the name ’My Pécs Stamp’ was for the occasion of a charity sports event "Run for curing cancer". These stamps also picture some famous Pécs sights and they contain a small box – like all personal stamps – where anyone can place a personal or a favourite picture or the logo or emblem of their company.
