The Day of Hungarian Culture in Pécs – Icons Exhibition
In 2010 the nation celebrated the Day of Hungarian Culture in one of the European Capitals of Culture; Pécs.
Minister of Education and Culture, István Hiller, presented the Promoter of Hungarian Culture and the Ambassador of Hungarian Culture prizes in the National Theatre of Pécs on this day. The minister presented awards for those institution leaders, artists and teachers who contributed greatly to the cultural life of Pécs. The ceremony featured Beethoven’s Triple Concerto performed by the official ambassadors of the Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture Programme the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra and some outstanding artists like the Liszt-prize winner violinist, Barnabás Kelemen, Kossuth-prize winner pianist Jenő Jandó, an artist originally from Pécs, the cellist István Várdai, and Zoltán Peskó, the musical director and senior conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic.
Another very exciting programme that started on the day of Hungarian Culture is the ‘Icons Exhibition’. The icon collection of the Visual Arts Gallery of Sliven entitled Christian Art has been established with the cooperation of the Bishopric of Sliven in the past 40 years. This unique collection contains icons, prints, low and high relief drawings, church objects, small sculptures made of stone and woodcarvings. The exhibition in Pécs displays the most interesting pieces of the collection that spans a relatively long period of time.
