Key Projects - Revival of public spaces and parks

Uránváros Centre

One of the main objectives of the investments to be implemented under the ECoC programme – especially in this particular field – is to eliminate the existing shortcomings and harmful effects and to create modern green surfaces by making the most of the existing potentials. This development project is designed to renew the centre of the city quarter, Uránbányász Square, Szilárd Leó Street and Ybl Miklós Street. The main square will be provided with functions that can turn it into a community space. The renewal will include the public sculptures and the fountain in the square, new street furniture will be added and the entire area will receive a new, decorative pavement. The playground and the plants in the park will also be revived, and there will be more opportunity for relaxation and recreation.

Transport and parking

Although through traffic in the focal point of the subject area, Uránbányász tér and in the streets around Szilárd Leó Park will be restricted in line with the green space concept of the project, parking spaces in the street adjoining the park will be preserved or even expanded. The winning tender plans to separate roadway from pedestrian and bicycle routes by green zones.

Szilárd Leó Park

This will be a park for actively spending free time where every age group can find the activity that best suits their needs. Since there is an infant's nursery and a kindergarten close to the park, great importance was attached to creating a multi-functional playground of high standards during the planning phase.

The results of the design competition were announced in November 2007, and following the preparatory licensing procedures construction works began in March 2009.
